‘Ghana prison break’ – Chinese inmate from the Nsawam escapes from custody at Korle Bu

A Chinese national receiving medical treatment at Accra’s Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has reportedly escaped while serving a one-year jail sentence for theft at Nsawam Prison.

Wang Xiao allegedly feigned illness, prompting prison officials to transfer him to the hospital for treatment. However, he managed to elude the accompanying prison guards during his hospital visit.

The incident occurred on February 7, 2024, a Wednesday. DSP Irene Pokuah Wiredu, Head of Media Relations, confirmed that a wanted person notice has been issued by the Ghana Prisons Service, officially acknowledging the escape. The notice seeks assistance in locating and apprehending Wang Xiao.

Initially detained in Tema, Wang Xiao was serving his one-year sentence at Nsawam Prison after being convicted of theft. There are also rumors suggesting that Wang Xiao faces prosecution on additional charges in a separate case.
