The National Media Commission (NMC) has initiated procedures to suspend the frequency authorizations of Onua TV and Onua FM. The decision, as per the NMC, stems from what it characterizes as “persistently dangerous broadcasts” by these Media General-owned entities.

Reports indicate that the NMC has notified some institutional partners about the ongoing processes toward suspending the frequency of the two stations.

The NMC’s notice, as reported by Graphic Online, states, “We believe our intervention to save the nation may have implications for your members and their clients who deal with the two stations.

We, therefore, deem it necessary to inform you of our action to enable you to advise the advertising community accordingly.”

“Our action is in line with our Memorandum of Cooperation agreed upon by stakeholders in the media industry, including the Advertising Association of Ghana, in April 2021 at the Alisa Hotel and executed on June 15, 2021. We have attached correspondence relating to the matter for your records,” it further explained. Approximately two weeks ago, the station issued a final warning to Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart regarding an inciteful broadcast.

In a statement released by the Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the statement addressed the station’s deemed dangerous and unprofessional behavior. It highlighted how Captain Smart directly insulted the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) by referring to them as “beasts.”
