The medical team overseeing Afua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Record sing-a-thon attempt has provided insight into the decision to conclude the effort after five days.

Afua, a journalist and former beauty queen, successfully surpassed the previous record of 105 hours, set by Indian Sunil Waghmare in 2012, concluding her attempt after 126 hours and 52 minutes.

Dr. Grace Buckman, the head of Afua’s medical team, explained that the decision to end the sing-a-thon was motivated by a prioritization of her health.

Afua’s prolonged period of sleep deprivation had started affecting her body system, and signs of mental stress were becoming evident.

“There’s only a point you can go as a person. She has done so well, and we are extremely proud of her,” stated Dr. Buckman, emphasizing the importance of Afua’s health. The medical team decided it was time for her to rest and recover.

Awaiting official confirmation from the Guinness World Record judges, Afua’s attempt spanned five consecutive days, starting from December 24 to December 29, 2023.

Notably, numerous Ghanaian celebrities, including Becca, Cina Soul, Sista Afia, Kwabena Kwabena, Eno Barony, Kobi Rana, Sarkodie, Nana Ama McBrown, and Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, rallied at the Akwaaba village to show their support for the journalist and former beauty queen during the attempt.
