The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Ghana has announced a groundbreaking initiative to conduct lifestyle audits targeting celebrities and individuals suspected of possessing unexplained wealth. This move reflects a commitment to ensuring financial accountability and responsibility within the country.

EOCO’s decision comes in the aftermath of a guilty plea by Ghanaian social media influencer and musician, Mona Montrage, also known as Hajia4reall, in a $2 million romance scam. This high-profile case has underscored the need for measures to address financial irregularities and ensure that individuals’ wealth aligns with their declared sources of income.

Edward Cudjoe, Head of Administration and Investigations at EOCO, revealed that processes were underway to initiate lifestyle audits for individuals with unexplained wealth. He emphasized the agency’s desire to amend existing laws to align with international standards, allowing for proactive scrutiny of individuals’ financial profiles.

Under this proposed amendment, individuals would be required to substantiate any disparities between their wealth and earnings, with the burden of proof resting on them to explain the origin of their resources.

By targeting celebrities and individuals with suspected unexplained wealth, EOCO aims to promote financial transparency and accountability at all levels of society. The initiative not only addresses potential financial irregularities but also serves to foster a culture of responsible financial behavior among high-profile figures and the broader population.
