Dr. Bawumia has made history by becoming the first non-Akan to lead the NPP into a general election after serving as President Akufo-Addo’s running mate since 2008.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken the lead in the recently concluded NPP presidential primaries, positioning himself to face former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general election.

Dr. Bawumia triumphed over three other candidates: Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken Assin Central Member of Parliament; Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Agriculture; and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Mampong Member of Parliament.

According to preliminary results, Dr. Bawumia received 118,210 votes, accounting for 61.43% of the total, while his closest competitor, Mr. Agyapong, received 71,991 votes, accounting for 37.41%. Dr. Afriyie Akoto finished third with 1,459 votes (0.76%), while Addai-Nimoh received only 781 votes (0.41%).

The presidential primary was attended by 193,339 delegates, with 192,441 valid votes and 898 votes rejected. The turnout rate was 94.63%.

Dr. Bawumia’s victory was widely anticipated, with Hon. Ken Agyapong his closest competitor in the race.

The 2024 election is expected to be a close race, with both Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama flying the flags of their respective parties to victory.
